87th Academy Awards Predictions: Mid-November Update

This was a rather busy week in this year’s Oscar campaign.  Oscar hopefuls Interstellar and Big Hero 6 were released.  The former is in trouble after suffering disappointing but still solid reviews and a disappointing but still solid haul at the box office while the later solidified a hold in the animated feature race.  Also, the AFI Fest saw the debuts of A Most Violent Year, Selma, The Gambler and American Sniper.  A Most Violent Year may be to small to be a major contender but it could still get nominations for Supporting Actress (for an apparently fiery performance from Jessica Chastain), Lead Actor (for another strongly received performance from Oscar Isaac), Original Screenplay and maybe even sneak in for Best Picture.  Selma seems like a game changer coming out of last night’s screening.  It should be a contender across the board and might be able to challenge The Imitation Game, Unbroken and Boyhood for the top prize.  The Gambler does not seem like a contender at all while the response from last night’s screening of American Sniper is too mixed to get a true sense of its Oscar prospects.  Finally, the animated short film shortlist was released.
