66th Primetime Emmy Nominations Predictions: May Update

Not much has changed with this Emmys race since my last update.  The only major news is that Sherlock will be competing in Outstanding TV Movie instead of Outstanding Miniseries.  I’m not a huge fan of this move.  Sherlock probably had a similar chance at winning either category (as Fargo is a well-written front-runner in Miniseries that could always fall apart by the end of its 13-episode season while The Normal Heart is a huge frontrunner on paper in TV Movie but will actually have to deliver first), but by submitting in TV Movie it limits Sherlock to just one of its 3 episodes.  The campaign chose “His Last Vow” as that 1 episode, which is far from being the best choice.  It allows a huge chance for Martin Freeman to win, but the program probably would have been better served by choosing the exceptional and much more self-contained “The Sign of Three”.

1 comment:

  1. I agree that His Last Vow is not the superior episode for Sherlock to submit. They should have done The Sign of Three.

Looking at your list, I think you need to add the Fargo cast in the miniseries section. Billy Bob Thorton and Martin Freeman are easily frontrunners in the lead actor categories, while I can see nods going to Allison Tolman for supporting actress and Colin Hanks and/or Bob Odenkirk for supporting actor. I'd also say Fargo has a chance for a Director nod (though not likely a win) for either the pilot or the finale.

The only changes I would make otherwise is that I feel Homeland will not make the director cut since I feel it's good will has run out (I see either an episode of Game of Thrones or maybe Mad Men/True Detective getting in) and I think there's still just enough love for Mad Men to make Best Drama over Downton Abbey for similar reasons as above.

Other than than, this is a pretty solid list. I'm curious to see how it turns out.
