66th Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations Predictions: April Update

There were three major news stories on the Emmys front since my last update.  First of all, was the news that 24: Live Another Day would not air enough episodes in the eligibility period to be eligible for this year’s Emmys.  That’s a huge blow to the miniseries’ award chances as, no matter how good it is, it will struggle to find any momentum with a year between its finale and the beginning of voting for next year’s Emmys.

The second major update was the announcement that Shameless was granted the special privilege of being able to switch from the drama categories to the comedy categories.  This shouldn’t have much impact, but it does open the possibility of a nomination for Emmy Rossum as the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series is a lot weaker than the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.

The final and biggest update was the news that HBO is going to submit True Detective in the Drama categories instead of the Miniseries/TV Movie categories.  While this is bad for me (as I want to see both Breaking Bad and True Detective win), this is great for the Emmys as it will create a two-way (possibly three-way if House of Cards can keep up) race for the Outstanding Drama Series category.  True Detective will suffer a bit with its overall nomination total due to this move (for instance, Michelle Monaghan will have a lot of trouble getting into the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series field whereas she would have been a contender for the award itself the Supporting Actress in a Miniseries/Movie category), but the program will now receive a lot more publicity in the Drama categories.
